MENOMONIE (April 9, 2017) - Throughout the weekend, UW-Stout got good pitching and timely hitting and finished a perfect weekend by sweeping UW-Stevens Point, 5-1, 6-3, Sunday at Alumni Field.

Beth Wood and Kyncaide Diedrich pitched complete game wins, with Wood taking the first game, allowing only one run, and that was unearned. Wood scattered eight hits throughout the game. Diedrich took the second game win, allowing seven hits, and striking out four. Diedrich, who did not give up a walk, got into trouble in the third inning as the Pointer got all of their runs in the stanza.

In the opener, Stout got all of the runs they would need in the first inning on Alicia Meyer's three-run home run to centerfield. The Pointers struck in the third, getting their only run of the game. Stevens Point would strand six runners in the final four innings of the game.

Stout tacked on two insurance runs in the fifth inning on RBIs by Megan Hultgren and Rachel Thomas.

Stout used a big fourth inning in the second game, scoring four runs.Katelyn Schobert drove in two runs and Thomas plated a pair with a single .

The Pointers did pull to within one run with a three-run third inning, but Stout scored single runs in the fourth and the sixth innings. In the sixth, Thomas led off with a triple, then came home on Wood's single.

"Everything seems to be working on all cylinders right now," head coach Becky Iaccino said. "The work we put in at practice is paying off, and our commitment to the process is proving itself. Now is the time to continue to believe in our skills and trust that no matter what, no matter how hard it seems, doing the little things well, will continue to push us forward."

Diedrich got some help from her outfield throughout the game.Rightfielder McKayla Brunner made a spectacular sliding catch to her right to open the fifth inning, then came a long way to her left to snare a foul ball.

"Defensively, we were solid," Iaccino said  "We've got everybody making big plays for us, but more importantly, making the routine plays as well.  Our practices have been extreme high intensity on the defensive side.  And you can see that players want the ball hit to them.

"I have personally been pushing our outfield hard, asking them for more and not being satisfied with the OK.  And the beautiful thing is, it shows in the games.  I'm so proud of how we are attacking our defensive side of the game.  I keep saying, our pitching and defense will keep us in the game long enough for our offense to win."

Diedrich had another strong day, going 3-for-4 in the first game and picking up a hit. Thomas responded to being dropped to the No. 9 spot in the first game, and made the ball pay in the second game when she went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Wood had three hits on the day, and Francois, following a six hit day Saturday, had four total hits.

Stout travels to UW-River Falls Friday, April 14 for a 2 p.m. start.
