UW-Platteville 10, UW-Stout 6
MENOMONIE (April 9, 2017) - UW-Stout split on the second day of their weekend series with UW-Platteville, but the weekend proved to be a success for the young Blue Devil squad that took 3-of-4 games from the Pioneers to open the WIAC season.
Stout captured the first game, 7-3, but could not complete the four-game sweep when the Pioneers captured the final game, 10-6.
Platteville (16-7, 1-3 WIAC) scored first, tallying a pair of runs in the third inning, but Stout scraped their way back behind some good pitching by senior Tyler Christenson. After allowing the two runs in the second, Christensen did not allow a run the rest of the way.
Stout (6-13, 3-1 WIAC) picked up a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by
Noah Brown, then took the lead with a two run seventh. One run scored on an error and
Jon Krueger doubled in another run for a 3-2 lead. Christensen got into trouble in the eighth inning and
Casey Ryan came on to bail him out, leaving the bases loaded.
Stout erupted from the momentum swing with a four-run eighth.
Ben Vanhove laid down a bunt with Brown on third, and beat out the throw as Brown crossed the plate.
Matt Emmer drove in a run on a fielders' choice. Krueger drove in another run and
Sam Waters singled in a run.
Ryan did give up a run in the ninth, but got out of harm's way to earn his second save of the weekend.
Krueger was 3-for-4 in the contest with two RBI and Waters was 3-for-5. Emmer had two RBI. Christensen gave up six hits and two runs, striking out two for the win. Ryan surrendered a hit and a run for the save.
In game two, Platteville struck early with a two-run first. Stout got half of the that back when
Jordan Wilson recorded a sacrifice fly. Stout took the lead in the third on an RBI groundout by Waters and an RBI single by Brown.
But the Pioneers made their case with a five run fourth inning, then tacked on two more in the fifth to jump out 9-3. A two-run home run by Brown in the fifth cut the deficit to 9-4. Platteville scored in the seventh and
Ryan Connor drove in a run for Stout in the bottom of the seventh.
Brown was 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead Stout.
The Blue Devils will host conference favorite UW-Whitewater Thursday, April 13 and Friday, April 14.
