Blue Devils downed by second ranked Warhawks

UW-Whitewater 11, UW-Stout 1 (7 inn) | UW-Whitewater 10, UW-Stout 2

WHITEWATER (April 13, 2017) - Second ranked UW-Whitewater must have been smarting after suffering their worst loss in more than a decade and the Warhawks returned to their winning ways by sweeping UW-Stout, 11-1, 10-2, Thursday at Miller Stadium.

The Blue Devils (6-15, 3-3 WIAC) came into today's game in second place behind the Warhawks (18-3, 6-0 WIAC), but were limited to four hits in the first game and five hits in the second game. The Warhawks were coming off a 21-3 loss to Concordia-Wisconsin Tuesday.

The game was originally scheduled in Menomonie, but wet field conditions forced the change of venue. Menomonie was still considered the home team on the scoreboard and batted in the bottom half of the inning.

Whitewater put three runs on the board in the top of the first. Stout did cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the second inning. Ben Vanhove walked to lead off the inning, then was safe by error on Tim Bott's fielder's choice. Matt Emmer pushed the runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt. Jon Krueger's groundout brought home Vanhove.

The Warhawks countered with four runs in the third and put up four more runs in the fifth to close out the scoring. Stout did get into scoring position in the sixth inning. Noah Brown opened with a single, then moved a base on Joel Hollow's center field single. But both were stranded after three consecutive outs.

In the second game, Stout held Whitewater to single runs in the first and fourth innings before tallying five runs on four hits and an error in the top of the sixth.

The Blue Devils dug out two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Matt Emmer opened with a lead-off single, then moved when Krueger reached on an error. Sam Waters' groundout pushed Emmer and Krueger to second and third. The pair came home when Jordan Wilson pounded a double to left center to make it 7-2. Whitewater closed out the scoring three runs in the seventh.

Whitewater's Brett Krause had three RBI in game one and five Warhawks had two hits apiece in game two.

The teams will close out the series, Friday, April 14 in Whitewater with first pitch scheduled for noon.
