MENOMONIE (April 8, 2017) - UW-Stout came from behind in the first game win over UW-Platteville and held off the Pioneers in the second game to record a conference opening sweep over the Pioneers, 5-4, 8-7, at Nelson Field Saturday.
Derek Graves went 8.2 innings to pick up the win as first year coach
Ben Kincaid stayed with his senior throughout the majority of the contest. Graves scattered seven hits and allowed four runs, all over the first three innings.
The Pioneers scored a single run in the first, but Stout took the lead as
Jordan Wilson and Josh Hollow drove in runs to give Stout a 2-1 lead. The Pioneers grabbed the lead back with three runs in the third inning. The Blue Devils chipped away.
Tim Bott opened the fourth with a double, then came home on
Jon Krueger's single and Stout trailed by one run, 4-3. Krueger drove in the tying run, plating
Matt Emmer, after the freshman doubled. Stout would get what would prove to be the game winning run in the eighth inning when
Sam Waters scored Emmer, who had reached with a single, followed by a stolen base.
Graves pitched into the eighth inning, but was pulled with runners on first and second and two outs.
Brad Rindfleisch faced the final batter, forcing a flyout to earn the save.
In the nightcap, the Blue Devils held a 7-1 lead, only to see Platteville pull to within one run with a five run sixth inning. Stout pulled out to an 8-6 lead in the bottom of the sixth when Waters scored Bott with a sacrifice bunt.
The Pioneers added a run in the seventh and
Casey Ryan came on in the eighth and ninth innings to earn the save, allowing two hits, both in the ninth, but forced a final out infield flyout.
Max Sires picked up his second win of the season, going six innings.
Wilson and
