MENOMONIE (April 29, 2017) - UW-Whitewater stayed perfect in conference play and did it at the expense of UW-Stout with an 8-0, 6-1 sweep Saturday at Alumni Field.
The Warhawks (33-7, 14-0 WIAC) scored seven runs in the top of the fifth to take command in the opener and end the game on the 8-run rule after five innings. Bella Matthias kept Stout hitless through the five innings.
Whitewater opened second game by scoring three runs in each the first and second innings, but then the Blue Devils (16-20, 5-7 WIAC) kept the Warhawks off the board the rest of the way, allowing only three hits in the final five innings.
Beth Wood and
Rachel Thomas each had two hits for Stout.
Stout did earn a berth in the WIAC Championship, May 5-7, at Whitewater, but their seed has yet to be determined. Stout still has a game with UW-Oshkosh to play and that doubleheader will be held Sunday, April 30 at 10 a.m., weather permitting.
