MENOMONIE (April 28, 2017) - Getting hits wasn't a problem for UW-Stout but getting the runners home was as the Blue Devils were swept by UW-Eau Claire, 5-0, 9-1, Friday at Alumni Field.
Stout stranded 11 runners, including twice leaving the bases loaded, in the first game on seven hits and left nine runners in the second game off nine hits. Stout's only run of the evening came in the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game.
In the opener, both teams were scoreless through the first three innings before the Blugolds (25-9, 6-6 WIAC) broke through with two runs in the fourth inning. The Blugolds tacked on three runs in the the seventh inning. Stout (16-18, 5-5 WIAC) left the bases loaded in the second and fourth innings and had a runner on in every inning except the first.
Megan Hultgren was 2-for-3 to lead Stout. Leah Wolff and Rachel Heffel were 2-for-4 for Eau Claire. Heffel stole three bases in the first game and two in the second, breaking the school's single season stolen base record.
In game two, Eau Claire scored a single run in the second inning, then added three runs in the third and again in the fourth inning. Eau Claire added two runs in the seventh inning.
Stout got their first run of the day after
Rachel Thomas singled, then came home on
Kyncaide Diedrich's double.
Beth Wood,
Megan Hultgren and
Kim Jablonski each had two hits for Stout in the second game. Evie Schaller had two home runs and three RBI for Eau Claire. Brooke Varian and Tayler Mort each had two hits.
Stout will host UW-Whitewater, Saturday, April 29 at 3 p.m. The Warhawks clinched the conference title with a sweep of UW-River Falls Saturday and will host the conference championship May 5-7. Stout is scheduled to close the regular season when they host UW-Oshkosh, Sunday, April 30 at 1 p.m.
