Concordia-Illinois 10, UW-Stout 0 (5 inn) |
Elmhurst College 4, UW-Stout 1
ROSEMONT, Ill (March 26, 2017) - The early innings cost UW-Stout a pair of games as the Blue Devils completed a four-game swing through the Chicago area Sunday. Stout lost in five innings to Concordia-Illinois, 10-0, to start off the day, then were topped 4-1 by Elmhurst College at The Ballpark at Rosemont just west of the Windy City.
In the opener against Concordia, the Cougars scored two runs in the bottom of the first, five in the second and three in the third. The Blue Devils (6-10) did open the game well with Concordia. Starting pitcher
Jessica Daley (Fr, Streamwood, Ill) reached on a one out single, then stole second where she was stranded. Stout would only get one more runner as far as second base, that coming in the fifth inning when
Kaylee Francois (So, Green Bay) opened the inning with a lead off single, then moved over a base on a groundout.
Concordia outhit Stout 10-3, with Daley, Francois and
Beth Wood (Jr, Mineral Point) each getting a hit. Allison Kruk had four RBI, going 2-for-3 for the Cougars. Michele Alexander was 2-for-2 with three RBI and pitcher Marita Van Dyke helped her own cause, driving in a run while hitting 2-for-3.
Against Elmhurst, Stout got on the board first and it would be Daley providing the fireworks when she belted a one out solo home run into far left field. But that would be the end of Stout's trips across the plate. For Daley, a native of nearby Streamwood, Ill, it would be her second home run of the weekend and the second of her collegiate career.
The Blue Jays scored three runs - with the help of a Stout error - in the bottom of the first inning. Elmhurst added a run in the fourth inning on Lauren Rismondo's solo home run.
The Blue Devils left two runners on in the second inning, and stranded single runners in the third and the sixth innings, which included Wood's one out double. After giving up the four runs, of which only one was earned, Wood allowed only two base runners the rest of the way, stranding them both. Wood struck out two.
The Blue Jays outhit Stout, 5-4, with Wood, Daley, Francois and
Rachel Thomas (Jr, Hastings, Minn) each getting a hit. Rismondo was 2-for-2 with two runs scored for Elmhurst, while Mikayla Melone was 2-for-3.
The games were played at The Ballpark at Rosemont, the home of the Chicago Bandits, a professional women's fastpitch team affiliated with the five-team National Pro Fastpitch (NPF).
Stout returns to action Saturday, April 1 at the University of Northwestern and Sunday, April 2 at Wartburg College.
