Softball Preview: Stout takes trip to Chicago area this weekend

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Blue Devils (6-6, 0-0 WIAC) are coming off their spring break trip to the Fastpitch Dream Classic in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Blue Devils head south again this weekend, only not as far when they travel to the Chicago area. The Blue Devils' game at Lake Forest College (5-7) has been moved up a day to Friday, March 24 with the doubleheader slated to get underway at 3 p.m. The Blue Devils are scheduled to play two games at Bandit Stadium in Rosemont, Ill, Sunday, March 26. Stout is slated to start off with Concordia-Chicago (x) at 10 a.m., followed by Elmhurst College (x) at noon.

UW-STOUT: Rachel Thomas and Kyncaide Diedrich are the only two players to see action in all 12 games so far this season. Thomas, a 2016 WIAC honorable mention selection, leads the team with a batting average of .439 (18-41) with four RBI, two doubles and a triple. Diedrich, who is playing softball for the first time at the collegiate level, is a known commodity to the Blue Devil women's basketball team where she earned all-conference honorable mention honors. Diedrich has been playing some outfield, some middle infield and has thrown one game. Diedrich is batting .433 (13-30) with two triples and a home run. She leads the team in stolen bases, nabbing 7-of-8, and is second in the WIAC in runs scored with 13. Beth Wood and Heather Bol are both hitting over .400. Wood, who pitches and plays first base, was a WIAC honorable mention selection last spring. Wood is hitting .424 (14-33) with two doubles and seven RBI. Wood has a 4-2 record in the circle, where she leads the team in strikeouts, with 19 in 32 innings pitched. Bol has been playing first base and is the designated player. She is hitting .424 (14-33) and leads the team in RBI with 10. She leads the team in RBI with 10. Freshmen Katilin Murray (.333), Megan Hultgren (.313) and Katelyn Schobert (.304), along with sophomore Alicia Meyer (.318) are all hitting over .300. As a team, Stout is hitting .331, third in the WIAC.   | 2017 Statistics

BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT: The Blue Devils went 5-5 overall at the  Fastpitch Dream Classic in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. last week. Stout opened the classic with losses to Gettysburg College (L, 7-1) and Lycoming College (L 7-4) then fell behind 8-1 to Rutgers-Camden before that game was suspended due to weather until Friday. The Rutgers game eventually finished with the same 8-1 score. The Blue Devils then won three in a row over Franciscan University (W 8-1), Mount St. Vincent (W 18-0) and Alfred State (W 18-6), before losing 8-3 to Bay Path College. Following the completion of the suspended game, Stout defeated Rutgers-Camden in 1-0 decision in a second game. Stout finished the week by splitting a pair of five inning games with Westminster College, losing the first 10-2, but leaving the tournament on an offensive highlight with a 12-0 win. |  Game Story and Statistics

GRAND APPEARANCE: Alicia Meyer hit a grand slam against the College of Mount St. Vincent, March 14. Meyer had six RBI in the game. The previous Blue Devils grand slam came March 8, 2013 by Alison Gray against St. Olaf College.

WIAC PRESEASON POLL The Blue Devils were selected to finish fifth, according to a WIAC preseason poll. UW-Eau Claire was picked first, followed by UW-Whitewater, UW-Oshkosh and UW-La Crosse. UW-River Falls, UW-Stevens Point and UW-Platteville were chosen sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively.

LAKE FOREST COLLEGE: The Foresters went 5-7 on their spring break trip to Leesburg, Fla., and beat WIAC members UW-River Falls (7-0) and UW-Oshkosh (13-2) on the trip. Junior shortstop Kat Beall is hitting .407 (11-27) with nine RBI and has punched out four doubles. Abby King has a team-best 11 RBI and is hitting .364 (8-22) and is tied for the team lead in home runs with Riley Frisbie with three. The Foresters have pounded out 12 home runs to their opponents' two. Stout and Lake Forest only meeting was March 11, 2001 with the Foresters taking a 7-3 win.   | 2017 Statistics

CONCORDIA-ILLINOIS: The Cougars return from Clermont, Fla., with a 5-5 overall record. Concordia is scheduled to meet North Park University, Friday, March 24. Melissa Balkema and Stefanie D'Anna are both hitting over .400 or above with Balkema going .452 (14-31) with five doubles. D'Anna is hitting .400 (14-35). The team has rolled up five triples over the first 10 games of the season and has stolen 20 bases in 21 attempts. Marita VanDyke is 4-1 in the circle with 21 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.94. UW-Stout coach Becky Iaccino was an assistant coach for two seasons at Concordia. Stout and Concordia-Illinois have met only once, that coming April 14, 2000 in Rock Island, Ill., with the Blue Devils taking a 13-4 win.   | 2017 Statistics

ELMHURST COLLEGE: The Blue Jays are currently wrapping up their spring break trip to Clermont, Fla., a trip that will conclude Friday, March 24. They quickly turn around to face UW-Stout and Concordia on Sunday. The Blue Jays did knock off UW-Stevens Point (3-0) in their first game of the season and lost to UW-Whitewater (8-6) in Florida. The Blue Devils and the Blue Jays have met three times with Stout holding a 2-1 lead in the series. Their most recent meeting came March 20, 2014, with Stout taking a 12-5 win. The teams split in the 90s, with Stout taking the first meeting, April 29, 1995, 14-0, but the Blue Jays exacting revenge the following year, 6-5, April 27, 1996. | 2017 Statistics

NFCA RANKINGS: UW-Eau Claire was fifth, UW-Whitewater 21st and UW-La Crosse was 24th in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top 25 poll.  |  NFCA Top 25 poll

AWARDS AND HONORS: Pitcher/infielder Beth Wood and catcher/outfielder Rachel Thomas were 2016 all-WIAC honorable mention selections.

COACH: Blue Devil coach Becky Iaccino (41-45) is in her second year as the head coach of the Blue Devils. Iaccino played professionally in Italy from 2003 to 2011 and with the Italian National team from 2005-07. She has been the head coach at Marian University where she was selected as conference coach of the year, and has eight years of experience as an assistant coach at Division I and III programs, most recently at Concordia University Chicago.
