NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (March 17, 2017) -
Beth Wood did not allow a run and the UW-Stout defense was flawless as the Blue Devils defeated Rutgers-Camden, 1-0, Friday at the Fastpitch Dreams Classic.
The Blue Devils (5-5) started the day off finishing a suspended game with Rutgers (6-7) earlier in the week. Trailing 8-1 in the contest coming into the bottom of the fourth inning, neither team scored and the score remained the same. But in those three innings,
Jessica Daley, who had replaced Wood just before the game was suspended due to a steady downpour on Monday, allowed only a lead off hit in the sixth inning.
As the week went on, Wood got stronger in the circle, and it showed when the Blue Devils faced Rutgers-Camden the second time around. While Wood scattered five hits around the field, she never allowed a runner past second base, did not walk or hit a batter and finished with four strikeouts.
The Blue Devils got the only run of the game in the fourth inning with two outs.
Kaylee Francois drew a walk, then was safe on
Megan Hultgren's fielder's choice when the ball got away from the second baseman and Francois took third.
Katelyn Schobert dropped a single into center field to bring in Francois for what would prove to be the only run of the game.
The Blue Devils did threaten in the sixth, but left the bases loaded.
Four different Blue Devils recorded hits in the game - Wood, Schobert,
Heather Bol and
Rachel Thomas. Camden's Jessica Thomas recorded two of the Raptor's five hits. In the circle, she struck out two and walked three.
Stout closes their spring break trip when they meet Westminster College in a doubleheader Saturday, March 18 beginning at 9:30 a.m. (ET).
