NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (March 13, 2017) - UW-Stout had a late start, then eventually had an early departure in a day that saw sunshine, rain and mud as the Blue Devils lost two games on the first day of their spring break trip to the Fastpitch Dreams Classic Monday.
Stout was scheduled to play three games on the day. The first with Gettysburg College got off to a late start as grounds crews scrambled to get the field ready following a day of rain on Sunday. The Blue Devils fell to Gettysburg, 7-1, then moved on to play Lycoming College, but fell to the Warriors, 7-4. Stout was originally scheduled to play Mansfield College for their third game, but the previous day's weather precipitated a change and Stout faced Rutgers-Camden, a team they are scheduled to meet Friday. The heavens opened and the game was suspended in the bottom of the fourth with Stout coming up to bat, trailing, 8-1. The game is scheduled to be continued Friday, March 17 before the team's originally scheduled game.at 1:30 p.m. (ET).
Gettysburg (3-2) charged over Stout for four runs on six hits in the bottom of the first inning.
Following four scoreless innings, Stout got their only run of the game in the top of the fifth. The Blue Devils loaded the bases and
Kaylee Francois was hit in the back with the ball to drive in
Rachel Thomas, who had gotten on base with a one-out single.
The Bullets got the run back in the bottom of the inning and added two more runs in the sixth.
Stout recorded eight hits in the game, with Thomas and
Beth Wood each collecting two. The Bullets' Meredith Taylor led all players, going 4-for-4 with three RBI. Taylor Doi was 3-for-4 and Jamie Abell was 2-for-4.
The Blue Devils were running uphill for most of the game against Lycoming. The Warriors scored a single run in the top of the first, then added four runs in the third inning.
Stout got on the board in the bottom of the third when
Kyncaide Diedrich beat out a bunt for a hit, then stole second. Diedrich took third on Thomas' groundout and scored on a throwing error on the play. Lycoming's Morgan Kumes hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning to give the Warriors a 7-1 lead.
Stout scored quickly in the fourth inning. Wood led off with a single, then scored on
Heather Bol's double down the left field line.
Alicia Meyer singled to move Bol to third. Bol scored when
Megan Hultgren's reached on an error. The Blue Devils added a run in the seventh. Thomas scored on a double steal attempt, when the trailing runner was thrown out at second.
Lycoming finished with 10 hits, while Stout recorded eight hits. Thomas and Wood each had two hits.
Jessica Daley pitched the final three innings of the game, not giving up a hit or run, striking out three.
Rachael Shady was 3-for-3 for Lycoming. Kayla Kline and Kunes each had two hits, with Kunes driving in four runs.
The third game of the day turned into a soggy, wet mess before it was suspended with Rutgers-Camden holding an 8-1 lead.
Stout is scheduled to play Franciscan University at 9:30 a.m. (ET) and Mount St. Vincent at 1:30 p.m. (ET).
