UW-Stout downed by Pointers in Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT (February 11, 2017) - UW-Stout found themselves in a hole early and simply could not get out as the Blue Devils lost 81-54 to UW-Stevens Point in Berg Gym Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Devils (7-16, 3-9 WIAC)  found the bottom of the basket only once in the first quarter and made a couple of free throws as they were outscored 16-4 after the first quarter. The Pointers (16-7, 8-4 WIAC) bulled their way to a 19 point, 41-22, halftime lead, then stretched that into 20-plus point leads in the third.

Down by 26 points, 54-28, in the third quarter, Stout dug their way back into contention, going on a 17-1 run to pull to within 12 points, 55-43, with 1:14 remaining in the third period.

Kyncaide Diedrich contributed five points in the run, all on free throws. Jenna Goldsmith added four points as did Whitney Folkers, who hit a 3-pointer and a free throw.

But Stevens Point regained the momentum late in the third and put the lead back up into 20-plus lead the final eight minutes of the game.

Goldsmith led Stout with 16 points, running her career totals to 977 points. Diedrich contributed 12 points. Goldsmith had seven rebounds and Diedrich six.

The Pointers' Lauren Anklam matched Goldsmith's total, leading the Pointers with 16 points. Taylor Barrett had 13 points and Payton Mix came off the bench for 12 points. Autumn Hennes pulled down seven rebounds and Barrett had six.

The Blue Devils shot 31 percent (18-58) from the floor, 36.4 percent (4-11) from 3-point range and 70 percent (14-20) from the line. The Pointers shot 54.0 percent (34-63) from the floor, 26.7 percent (4-15) from 3-point range and 69.2 percent (9-13) from the free throw line. The Pointers outrebounded Stout, 39-35.

Stout will close out the home portion of their schedule Wednesday, Feb. 15 when they host UW-La Crosse at 7 p.m. on Senior Night.  Stout will close the regular season Saturday, Feb. 18 when they travel to UW-Oshkosh for a 7 p.m. contest.
