Whitworth College 79, UW-Stout 71
SPOKANE, Wash (December 29, 2017) - UW-Stout held seventh-ranked Whitworth College to one of their lowest offensive outputs of the season, but the Blue Devils lost a 79-71 decision to the Pirates at the Whitworth Classic, hosted by Quality Inn Oakwood.
The Pirates (9-1), coming off their first loss of the season, jumped out to a 15 point, 36-21, halftime lead and moved that up to as much as 17 points in the second half. Stout (6-4) cut the lead to eight points at 56-48 on a 3-pointer by
Isaac Elliott, then went on a 8-3 run to pull to within three points, 59-56, with six minutes remaining in the game.Â
Whitworth erased that margin with a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer moments later, and that would be as close as Stout would get.
The Blue Devils outscored the Pirates 50-43 in the second half with Elliott,
Zach Dahl,
Sam Ortmann and
Joe Duty scoring the bulk of their points in the second half. Dahl and Duty each scored 11 second half points, with Duty finishing the game with 16 points and Dahl 15. Elliott scored eight of his 10 points in the second half and Ortmann scored all nine of his points after intermission.
Whitworth was averaging 85.8 points per game and had scored 80 or more points in six of their previous games. The Pirates were led by Kyle Roach with 25 points. Ben College tossed in 21, banking in five 3-pointers. Garrett Hull and Jared Christy each had 10 points, with Christy pulling down 10 rebounds.
Stout is scheduled to play the University of Puget Sound, Saturday, Dec. 30 at 4 p.m. (PT).
