University of Puget Sound 96, UW-Stout 86
SPOKANE, Wash (December 30, 2017) - For the second time in less than 24 hours, UW-Stout held their opponent under their season scoring average. But for the second time in 24 hours, the Blue Devils left Whitworth Fieldhouse with a loss, this time dropping a high scoring contest, 96-86, to the University of Puget Sound at the Whitworth College Classic.
Puget Sound entered the weekend averaging 101.6 points per game, ranking sixth in the NCAA Division III.
The Blue Devils (6-5) took a 41-35 halftime lead, but the two teams turned up the offense a notch or two and the Loggers (7-3) outscored Stout, 59-45, in the second half to take the win.
Stout had three players in double digits, with
Sam Ortmann scoring 21 points.
Isaac Elliott added 20 and
Zach Dahl 12. Elliott recorded his first double-double, adding 10 rebounds.
The Loggers' Jimmy Wohrer led all scorers with 32 points, hitting eight 3-pointers. Walker Shibley-Styler had 14 points, Easton Driessen 12 and Zion Shepard was credited with 11 points.
Stout committed 23 turnovers, but out rebounded the Loggers, 57-40.
Stout shot 44.4 percent (28-63) from the floor. The Blue Devils dropped in 25 of 39 free throws, 14 in the second half.
The Loggers shot 43.0 percent (34-79) from the floor, 37.5 percent (15-40) from 3-point range and 54.2 percent (13-24) from the line.
The Blue Devils return to Menomonie and will open the WIAC schedule when they host UW-Platteville, Wednesday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m.
