Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Blue Devils and Falcons go into overtime, end in a draw

UW-Stout 4, Concordia 4 (OT)

MENOMONIE (December 16, 2017) - UW-Stout and Concordia University Wisconsin played extra hockey on Saturday at the Fanetti Community Center, but the game ended in a 4-4 tie.

The Blue Devils (5-7-2) and Concordia University Wisconsin (8-3-2) faced off again this afternoon after playing against each other the night before. Less than 24 hours after the first meeting with Concordia taking a 2-1 win, the second game was a combined eight goals and an overtime.

After a scoreless first period by both teams the night before, the Falcons' Braydon Barker scored his third goal of the season at 5:14 of the first period.

Stout was not ready to quit as defenseman Mathias Ahman scored his team leading fifth goal of the season just under a minute after to tie the game back up. Connor Chambers and Kyle Sylvester accounted for an assist on the scoring play.

The Blue Devils saw themselves down a man from having too many men on the ice at the halfway mark of the first period and the Falcons capitalized. Nick Guerra of CUW scored a power play goal to take the lead again and make it 2-1. The shot total of the first period would favor the Falcons, 8-4.

After having just four shots in the first period, the Blue Devils had six shots on net in just the first four minutes of the second period. With just under four minutes into the second period, Stout's Tom Schmidt scored his first goal of the season to tie the game back up at 2-2. Connor Chambers and Mathias Ahman each had an assist.

At the 8:38 mark of the second period, CUW took the lead again after Jim Pearson scored. Just after the Falcons' goal, the Blue Devils found themselves having a power play.

Connor Chambers passed to Mathias Ahman and found the back of the net on a one-timer shot. It was Ahman's second goal of the night and sixth of the season. Kyle Sylvester again had an assist on an Ahman goal to make the game 3-3.

After the goal, Stout saw themselves down two men as they would skate five on three. The Blue Devils did not back down as they killed off both penalties and seconds after killing the last penalty off, Austin Jackson scored his first goal of the season to give Stout their first lead of the game. The Blue Devils outshot the Falcons 15-6 in just the second period.

With 8:44 to go in the third period, Stout would get a goal taken away. The call was goalie interference and the scored remained 4-3 in favor of the Blue Devils. With 3:18 left to go in the game, the Blue Devils killed off another penalty and saw the finish line.

But CUW did not back down, as the Falcons had an extra attacker on the ice with a minute left to go. CUW's Dante Hahn slid a goal passed Ahlgren to tie up the game with just 18 seconds to go in the third period.

In overtime, both teams would have chances to score, but ultimately ended in a draw. CUW outshot the Blue Devils 29-25.

Stout's Tommi Ahlgren recorded 25 saves in the contest. Falcons' Nick Malvin recorded 21 saves.

The Blue Devils have some time off before they hit the ice again. They will face off against St. Olaf College at the Fanetti Community Center on Friday, Jan. 6 at 7 p.m.
