St. Olaf College 6, UW-Stout 5
MENOMONIE (January 5, 2018) - St. Olaf College scored two goals in 22 seconds of game time to steal a 6-5 win over UW-Stout Friday at the Fanetti Community Center.
Trailing 5-4 with less than seven seconds left and in a face off in Stout's zone, the Oles' Roshen Jaswal scored at the buzzer with an extra attacker on the ice to send the game into overtime. Twenty-one seconds into the extra period, Menomonie native and St. Olaf senior Drew Otto scored to hand Stout the one goal defeat.
The loss took the glitter off of a Blue Devil (5-8-2) hat trick by defenseman
Mathias Ahman (Jr, Harnosand, Sweden). The Swedish native opened a three-goal first period for Stout with a goal seven minutes into the contest. Ahman, who was Stout's leading scorer coming into the game, added to his season totals with a pair of power play goals in the third period.
The Blue Devils opened the game with a three-goal first period, led off by Ahman and followed up by
Dylan Zins (Jr, Prior Lake, Minn) at 14:19 and
Jonathan Marzec (Fr, Spokane, Wash) at 16:16. For Marzec it was his first goal as a Blue Devil.
The Oles (6-5-0) answered back in the second period with three goals of their own, Gordon Wells at 4:20, Carter Lukenda and Sawyer Jacobson with a short-handed goal at 12:02 to knot the game.
Ahman took advantage of the power play twice in the third period, scoring at 3:56 and again at the 9:00 mark to give Stout a 5-3 lead.
The Oles Kyle Rimbach pulled his team to within 5-4 at 11:18. St. Olaf pulled their goalie with 24 seconds remaining and kept the puck in Stout's zone for the final seconds to set up Jaswal's tying goal.
Etienne Roy (Sr, St. Henri, Quebec) was saddled with the loss, making 26 saves. Noah Parker came on in relief of Eric Hancock midway through the third period to notch his first win and decision of the season. Parker recorded five saves, while Hancock had 26 saves.
Connor Chambers (Fr, Pequot Lakes, Minn) recorded three assists for the Blue Devils.
Evan Butcher (Fr, Anchorage, Alaska) and
Trent Olson (So, Superior) each had two assists.
Ahman's hat trick was the first Blue Devil hat trick since Joe Anderson accomplished the feat Jan. 9, 2016 against Gustavus Adolphus.
The Blue Devils are scheduled to host Bethel University in an exhibition contest, Saturday, Jan. 6 at 8 p.m. Stout will be at Hamline University, Friday, Jan. 12 and at Augsburg University, Saturday, Jan. 13.
