Stout scores first, but Falcons down Blue Devils 2-1

Concordia University Wisconsin 2, UW-Stout 1

MENOMONIE (December 15, 2017) - The UW-Stout hockey team finally took the ice after two weeks off, as UW-Stout (5-7-1, 2-0-0) would host Concordia University Wisconsin (8-3-1, 4-2). Stout scored first, but the Falcons would prevail and win the game, 2-1, Friday at the Fanetti Community Center.

In the first period, the Blue Devils found themselves with two power play chances, but CUW killed both penalties off. After a scoreless first period, both teams would head into the locker room.

As the puck dropped for the start of the second period, Stout had a lot of energy and scoring chances, but could not find the back of the net.

At the 14:41 mark of second period, the Blue Devils were whistled for tripping. After the draw, the Blue Devils' Adam Kresl and Gavin Smith found themselves on a two-on-one going down the ice. Kresl passed it and Smith scored his second goal of the season just nine seconds into the penalty kill to make the game 1-0 in favor of the Blue Devils. The goal is Stout's second shorthanded goal of the season. Mathias Ahman also recorded an assist on the score. The Blue Devils eventually killed off the penalty to make it even strength.

With 2:35 left in the second period, the Falcons' Adam Fauchoux saw daylight on a breakaway. After a deke by Fauchoux, Stout's Tommi Ahlgren made a nice pad save to keep the score 1-0.

It didn't take long for CUW to score in the third period as Josh Adkins scored his fifth goal of the season to make the score even at 1-1.

Stout saw another power play chance at 15:10 of the third period. After a couple scoring chances, CUW would draw another penalty to make it five-on-three in favor of the Blue Devils. After shots from the point and several scoring chances near the net by Stout, CUW eventually killed off both penalties.

With just under four minutes left to play in the game, the Falcons' Nick Guerra scored a power play goal to break the tie. CUW held off the Blue Devils' offense as Guerra's goal proved to be the game winning goal.

Ahlgren stopped 23 saves in the game, including 10 in the third period. CUW's goaltender Nick Malvin recorded 28 saves. Stout out shot the Falcons, 29-25.

The two teams will see each other again tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 15 at 4:05 p.m. at the Fanetti Community Center.
