UW-Superior 83, UW-Stout 70
SUPERIOR (December 1, 2017) - UW-Stout started the second half on an 8-2 run to pull to within four points of UW-Superior four minutes into the second half, but the Yellowjackets held off the Blue Devils never allowing them closer than five points the rest of the game on their way to an 83-70 win Friday at Mortorelli Gymnasium.
Stout's (3-3)
Amber Fabeck hit a quick layup to open the second half, but Superior(4-2)Â countered with a bucket by Hannah Norlin. Stout's
Kyncaide Diedrich scored the next six points, a 3-pointer, followed by a three-point play on a basket and a free free throw.
The Yellowjackets slowly pulled ahead after that, taking a nine-point, 59-51, lead at the end of the third period.
The Blue Devils attacked in the second half from the 3-point line, hitting seven long range bombs in the half and 10 for the game. But it wouldn't be enough to counter Superior's, well, superior shooting. The Yellowjackets shot 52.6 percent (10-19) in the third quarter and 76.9 percent (10-13) in the final quarter. Superior finished the game hitting 55.6 percent (35-63) from the floor.
Stout finished the game shooting 40.3 percent (25-62) and was 40 percent (10-25) from beyond the arc.
Superior's Hailey Kontny scored 27 points to lead all scorers. She was joined in double-digits by teammates Norlin (17 points) and Evan Reinertsen (12).
Bailey Diersen broke the 20 point for the fourth time this season - and for the third consecutive game - when she led Stout with 21 points. Diersen was 8-21 overall, but did hit 4-8 from 3-point range.
Fabeck scored 13 points and Diedrich dropped in 10 points. Stout held a slight 35-32 advantage off the glass, with
Carolyn Feddema coming off the bench for six rebounds.
Stout returns to action Saturday, Dec. 2 when they host Northland College at 3 p.m. in the second part of a doubleheader with the men's program.
