MENOMONIE (December 2, 2017) - UW-Stout needed only the first two minutes of the game to race out to a 10-0 lead on their way to a 68-26 win over Northland College Saturday at Johnson Fieldhouse. And the Blue Devil offense just kept rolling as the defense completely shut down the Lumberjills.
Bailey Diersen hit a lay-up only seconds into the game,
Kyncaide Diedrich followed up with a 3-pointer and
Haley Seifert followed up with a 3-pointer of her own to give the Blue Devils (4-3) an 8-0 lead and
Anna Brown made it a 10 point lead.
The Lumberjills (1-5) would get on the scoreboard with about three minutes off the clock, but Stout raced out to a 24-5 first quarter lead, a 39-15 halftime advantage and a 53-20 third quarter lead. Stout would hold the Lumberjills to five points in the first period, 10 in the second, five in the third and six in the fourth.
Diedrich led all scorers with 16 points, Brown finished with 12 and Diersen 10. Stout was able to empty their bench as 13 players scored and 13 players had at least one rebound. Stout shot 41.9 percent (26-62) from the field and hit 8-of-20 3-point attempts. Stout held a 40-23 advantage in rebounds.
Emily Jacques finished with five rebounds.
The Lumberjills were held to 25.6 percent (10-39) shooting and committed 25 turnovers.Stout recorded 12 steals, with Diedrich and Diersen each picking Northland's pocket four times.
The 26 points by the Lumberjills was the fewest points Stout has allowed during the
Mark Thomas era. The school mark stretches back to the 1970s when games were not nearly as high scoring on either side, with both sides scoring in the 20s and 30s. During the 1976-77 season, Stout defeated UW-Barron County by scores of 40-19 and 62-26. The next year, the Blue Devils defeated Barron County, a two-year school, 53-26.
During the 1972-73 season, Stout's wins of the season came in back-to-back wins over a pair of two-year UW schools, a 38-16 win at UW-Waukesha, followed by a 36-18 win over UW-Fond du Lac. The 16 points is the fewest allowed in school history.
During Thomas' 31 season, the fewest point allowed by Stout was 33 in a 95-33 win over Crown College, Nov. 15, 2011.
Last season in Ashland, the Lumberjills snapped a 10-game losing streak to the Blue Devils.
Stout is back in action Monday, Dec. 4 when they travel to Martin Luther College.
