MENOMONIE (November 3, 2017) - UW-Stout spotted Concordia-Moorhead a 3-0, then launched a comeback in the third period that fell just short as the Cobber downed the Blue Devils, 3-2, in Stout's home opener Friday at the Fanetti Community Center.
The Cobbers (1-1-1) wasted no time getting on the board, scoring less than two minutes into the game when Blake Berg scored at the 1:41 mark. Concordia doubled the lead with a short-handed goal at 16:48 of the first stanza when Joe Burgmeier scored.
The Cobbers made the score 3-0 four minutes into the second period, getting a goal by Mario Bianchi.
But Stout's (1-1-1)
Etienne Roy, who came on in goal to open the second period, would allow no more goals the rest of the way.
The Blue Devils, who last week had three power play goals, scored a pair of power play goals in the third period to make the ending interesting.
Kyle Sylvester scored at 7:40 of the third period, getting assists from
Mathias Ahman and
Conner Valesano, to get Stout on the board. Less than a minute later, Ahman would score on the power play, with an assist from Sylvester and Valesano.
Stout was able to pull Roy late in the game, and kept the puck in the Concordia zone, but could not crack goalie Jacob Stephan late. Stephan finished the night with 22 saves.
Roy finished the evening with 11 saves and
Tommi Ahlgren, who got the loss in working the first period, had five saves.
Stout will host St. John's University, Saturday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m.
