MENOMONIE (November 26, 2017) - UW-Stout went on an 11-2 run to end the first half and went on to a 67-56 home opening win over St. Catherine University, Sunday on Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse.
With the score tied at 23-23, with three minutes remaining in the second period, Stout freshman
Brianna Banks hit a 3-pointer to start off the run.
Bailey Diersen went on to hit three layups in the run and
Kyncaide Diedrich grabbed a rebound and went the distance to lay the ball in just before the halftime buzzer and Stout (2-2) led 34-25 at halftime.
The Wildcats (2-2) pulled to within two points, 34-32, to start off the third period.
Anna Brown hit a layup to make it a four point lead for Stout. St. Catherine would get as close as two points only once more in the game early in the fourth quarter, 51-49, but Stout would go on a 9-1 run with Diedrich scoring four points,
Kara Griswold three and Diersen two.
Stout build a double-digit lead with just over five minutes remaining and St. Kate's would only get as close as eight points the rest of the way.
Diersen, who started the game hitting 1 of 7 from the floor in the first quarter, finished with a game-high 22 points. The junior benefited at the line, hitting 10 of 13 charity shots. Diersen also pulled down seven rebounds, as Stout outrebounded St. Kate's, 52-40. Diedrich finished with eight rebounds to go with her 11 points.
Amber Fabeck finished with seven rebounds and nine points.
The Blue Devils finished the game with a season-high 18 steals. Diedrich, Diersen and Banks each had four steals for the Blue Devils. Banks also contributed six points and four rebounds.
St. Catherine's Danica Cambrice matched Diersen's 22 points, but led all players with four blocked shots. Morgan Kurth came off the bench to score 10 points.
Stout was 21-62 (.339) from the floor, 1-18 from 3-point range and 24-36 (.667) from the free throw line. The Wildcats were 20-61 (.328) from the floor, 1-10 from 3-point range and 15-25 (.600) from the line. St. Catherine was whistled for 28 fouls, Stout for 27.
The Blue Devils will be at St. Olaf College, Tuesday, Nov. 28 and return home Saturday, Dec. 2 to face Northland College at 3 p.m.
