Ortmann lights up Superior in second half

UW-Stout 67, UW-Superior 53

SUPERIOR (November 26, 2017) - UW-Stout's Sam Ortmann scored 16 of his game-high 20 points in the second half as the Blue Devils defeated UW-Superior, 67-53, in the final game of the Merrill Thompson Classic at UW-Superior Sunday.

Ortmann's second half points put an exclamation point on the Blue Devils (3-2) first half comeback. Except for an initial lead in the game, Stout trailed for most of the first 14 minutes of the first half, at times by as much as six points.

But once Keegan Dickson dropped in a layup at 6:18 of the first half to give Stout a 21-20 lead, the Blue Devils would never trail the rest of the way, taking a 36-29 halftime lead.

Adam Mackey scored six points in a three minute span down the first half stretch to help Stout widen the lead. Mackey would finish the game with 10 points, a Stout-best for the senior who transferred to Stout last season.

Dickson tallied 10 points for the Blue Devils. Shaq Coleman scored 17 to lead Superior, 14 in the second half.

Stout bedeviled the Yellowjackets, forcing 16 Superior turnovers. The Blue Devils took care of the ball, committing only five turnovers. Stout had a distinct advantage at the free throw line, dropping in 14 of 18 chances (.778), while the Yellowjackets were 4 of 8.

Stout was 24-52 (.462) from the floor and 5-17 (.294) from 3-point range. The Yellowjackets were 22-43 (.512) from the floor, 12-19 (.632) in the first half and 10-24 (.417) in the second half. The Yellowjackets were 5-15 (.333) from 3-point range.

Stout will host Bethany Lutheran College, Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m.
