St. Scholastica 84, UW-Stout 63
SUPERIOR (November 25, 2017) - St. Scholastica kept shooting - and hitting - from outside the arc and ran to an 84-63 win over UW-Stout in the Merrill Thompson Classic at UW-Superior Saturday.
The Saints (1-3) connected on 16 of 35 3-point shots (.457) , scoring the bulk of their points from 3-point range. Both teams attempted nearly the same number of shots from the field - Stout 56, St. Scholastica 58 - but the Saints accounted for 48 points from long range, while Stout (2-2) made 5 of 14 3-point shots (.357).
The Saints equally divided their 3s, hitting eight in each half, taking a 41-32 halftime lead. Scholastica took an 8-0 lead three minutes into the game. Stout fought back to narrow the gap and went on to tie the game at 25-25 at 6:34, but could never get the lead. The Saints finished the half on a 16-7 run.
Stout got as close as five points, 50-45, at 11:52 of the second on a lay-up by
Adam Mackey, but that would be the tightest the game would be the rest of the way.
Isaac Elliott led Stout with 18 points, 14 in the first half.
Zach Dahl came off the bench to score 11. Stout shot 25-56 from the field (.446) and 8-12 from the line (.667).
The Saints had four players in double digit scoring, led by Jarod Wilken's 25. Wilkins was a perfect 9 for 9 on the night and hit all seven of his 3-point shots. Brandon Newman scored 13 points,
Zach Dahlman 12 and Collin Anderson 10. The Saints shot 29-58 from the floor (.500) and 10-15 from the line (.667). Scholastica pulled down 38 rebounds to Stout's 27.
Stout will face UW-Superior in the final game of the tournament. Stout returns home to host Bethany Lutheran College, Wednesday, Nov. 29.
