MENOMONIE (October 8, 2017) - Both teams scored within four minute of each other in the first period and UW-Stout and UW-Stevens Point went to play scoreless soccer the rest of the way as the teams battled to a 1-1 draw Sunday at Nelson Field.
The Pointers (6-5-1, 0-1-1 WIAC) got on the scoreboard first when Gracie Wendels took a shot that Blue Devil goalie
Lynn Johnson looked like she was going to stop, but the ball rolled up and over Johnson's outstretched arms in the 26th minute. Wendels was assisted by Nora Hargett.
The Blue Devils (4-4-3, 1-0-2 WIAC) scored just under four minutes later when
Sydney Kasper scored her sixth goal of the season, taking a pass from Kaitlyn Ness, and sent the ball high into the opposite upper corner of the net.
The Pointers had a definite advantage in shots, outshooting the Blue Devils 19-5 overall and 9-3 on frame. But Johnson recorded eight saves turn her record to 2-3-2. The Blue Devils had only one shot in the first period, that coming on Kasper's goal. The Pointers out-shot Stout 11-1 before the break.
The Blue Devils played the ball in the Pointers' zone throughout the day and held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks, but could not take advantage of the set piece.
The tie extended Stout's unbeaten streak over the Pointers to five games. But the Pointers halted their losing streak to the Blue Devils at four.
The Blue Devils will be at UW-La Crosse, Wednesday, Oct. 11, then return home for a pair of games over homecoming weekend, taking on UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, Oct. 14 at 1 p.m. and Concordia-Moorhead, Sunday, Oct. 15 at 2 p.m.
