MENOMONIE (January 28, 2017) -
Anna Brown's steal as time ran out sealed an 86-84 UW-Stout win over UW-Platteville Saturday on Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse.
With the Blue Devils (6-13, 2-6 WIAC) clinging to the two point lead coming out of a timeout with 13 seconds remaining after
Carolyn Feddema made a free throw, Platteville worked the ball around their own perimeter. Brown stepped in front of a pass in front of the Platteville bench with four seconds showing on the clock, tipped the ball towards the scorers table, then dived to keep the ball in play, pushing it towards Stout's basket where
Kyncaide Diedrich retrieved the ball at the baseline as the buzzer sounded.
The play put an end to a furious Platteville (6-13, 2-6 WIAC) comeback that saw the Pioneers hack away at a 14 point Stout fourth quarter lead. The Pioneers came back from a 70-56 deficit at 8:58 of the fourth quarter, going on a 15-3 run to take a 73-74 lead with 4:50 remaining. The Pioneers went up 76-73 and the teams traded leads until
Jenna Goldsmith's basket and a free throw put Stout up 83-81 with 47 seconds left.
A free throw by the Pioneers' Kassie Hansen cut the lead to 83-82 on a free throw, but Stout took a three point lead back, 85-82, when
Bailey Diersen drained two charity shots. Hansen cut Stout's lead to one on a basket with 19 seconds left.Â
Carolyn Feddema hit the back-end of two free throws with 13 seconds remaining, setting up Brown's heroics.
Stout held a 39-30 halftime lead, then stretched that out a little with an offensive shootout by both teams, leading 64-53 at the end of the quarter. The Pioneers outscored the Blue Devils, 31-22, in the fourth quarter, but Stout had just enough for the win.
The Blue Devils had all five starters score in double digits, with Diersen leading the way with 17 points. Diedrich and Goldsmith tallied 15 points, Feddema 13 and Brown 10. Brown and Diersen each finished with five steals. Diedrich was close to a double double, racking up a career-best nine assists.
The Pioneers had four players reach double figures, with Hansen holding game honors with 18. She also pulled down nine rebounds. Morgan Hartman added 15 points, Allison Prestegaard 13 and Cassie Hamer came off the bench for 12 points. Prestegaard came close to a triple double with the 13 points, eight rebounds and eight blocked shots.
The Pioneers held a 46-33 advantage in rebounds. Prestegaard and Horstman pulled down eight rebounds each. Stout got six boards from Diedrich.
After two home games, Stout will hit the road and travel to UW-Eau Claire, Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m.
