MENOMONIE (January 25, 2016) - UW-Stout came back from a 24-point deficit to bring the game to within one point, but fell in the final seconds to WIAC rival River Falls. Four Blue Devils scored in double-digits,
Kyncaide Diedrich led the way once again with 19 points.
Stout (5-13, 1-6 WIAC) found themselves in an early hole after the first quarter, down 19-10 at the end of the first quarter, and in an even bigger hole midway through the second as River Falls (6-12, 1-6 WIAC) stretched out a 24-point lead. Diedrich drilled a wide open three pointer, assisted by
Bailey Diersen, to start the Blue Devil comeback.
Stout chipped away in the third quarter to find themselves down only 10 at the end of the half, after Diedrich drained another three pointer to make it a 56-46 game at the end of the third.
The fourth quarter proved to be even tougher. In a blaze of quick turnovers by River Falls and an inbound steal by
Carolyn Feddema and a layup from Diersen, Stout was within three with 1:08 remaining. at the 44 second mark, Diedrich drained a free throw to get the game to one point, 69-68.
The Falcons turned the ball over on a traveling call with 15 seconds remaining. Stout had one final look at the basket as
Jenna Goldsmith had a turnaround, left shoulder, hook shot fall short. Stout fouled with two seconds remaining, and the Falcons drained one more free throw to seal the win.
Along with Diedrich and Diersen, who scored 19 and 15 points, Goldsmith and
Anna Brown scored 14 point each. Goldsmith also grabbed 10 rebounds in the game, getting her first double-double of the season. The Blue Devils also played tough defense, grabbing a season high 12 steals in the game, Diedrich and Diersen leading the charge with five and four respectively.
The Falcons' Taylor Karge scored 20 points in just 28 minutes.
Stout will be at home this Saturday as they take on the Platteville Pioneers for a 3 p.m. tip.
