MENOMONIE (January 14, 2017) - In an up-and-down battle all night, UW-Stout's
Colton Brausen scored the game-winning goal just over a minute into overtime to lift the Blue Devils to a 6-5 win over Saint Mary's University.
Scoring came in streaks for both teams.
The Blue Devils got on the board first on
Karl Andersen's goal four minutes into the game, but Saint Mary's answered back witth the next three goals to take a 3-1 lead at 1:37 of the second period, getting an even strength, short-handed and power play goal in the streak.
The Blue Devils did a little answering of the their own, tying the score at 3-3 with goals by
Jack Forbort and
Riley Colvard to close out the second period, then taking the lead in the third on
Alex Toscano's first of two third period goals.
But the Cardinals knotted the score on Michael Cimba's goal at 8:39. Toscano scored his second goal of the night, this one on the power play, in a pile around and in the net to give Stout a 5-5 lead.
The Cardinals took took advantage of a 5-on-3 to know the score with less than four minutes remaining.
Saint Mary's was whistled for goaltender interference in the waning minutes of regulation, and the Cardinals went into the extra time one man short.
The Blue Devils were able to take advantage on
Joe Kleven's pass to Brausen, who scored his sixth goal of the season.
Spencer Viele took the win, making 35 saves, while Phil Heinle absorbed the loss with 28 saves.
Stout will host Concordia-Wisconsin, Friday, Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m., then will take on St. Thomas Saturday, Jan. 21 at 1:30 p.m. at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn.
