MENOMONIE, (September 3, 2016) - The Blue Devils got their 2016 campaign off to a great start with bang, defeating the Simpson Storm. They put up great offensive numbers, scoring 45 points from 74 plays and 521 total offensive yards. Senior Jordan Dabney (Monteca, Cal.) stood out for Stout, hauling in 223 yards receiving on only five catches, two of them touchdowns. Travis Urlaub (Sr, Stratford) also stood out, rushing the ball 23 times for 104 yards and a TD.

Stout wasted no time in their first drive of the game. They drove the ball from their own 46 yard line to set up field goal kicker Drew Pearson (So, Wausa). Pearson hit from 26 yards with 11:04 left in the quarter. The quarter ended at a 3-3 draw.

The teams again were tied by the end of the first half, this time at 17. Stout went up 10-3 with 13:39 left in the quarter after Urlaub's one-yard touchdown run. Simpson responded scoring twice. Two short, five-play and six-play drives put Simpson up 17-10. The following Stout drive was capped by a 70-yard pass from Jay Alston (So, Rochester, Minn.); Dabney shook his defender on the line of scrimmage and streaked down the field for the long pass and score. The quarter ended in a 17-all tie.

In the third quarter, Stout outscored Simpson 21-13. The Blue Devils went up 24-17 on a 9-play drive capped by a wide-open, three-yard Alston to Ben Hall (Sr, North Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) touchdown pass. The Blue Devils then handed the ball to senior Adolfo Pachecho (Elgin, Ill.), who ran the ball on all five plays of the one minute, 49 second drive. He racked up 57 yards and a touchdown, putting Stout up 31-17. Simpson answered by scoring their two touchdowns, making the game close at 31-30, with Stout on top, but Dabney answered the call again for the Blue Devils. He hauled in a 69-yard catch again from Alston for a touchdown. The Blue Devils ended the quarter up 38-30.

Stout added to their lead in the fourth quarter, but this time on defense. After a Alston pooch punt that landed on the two yard line, and gave the Blue Devil defense a short field, Iyen Ogbomoh (Jr, Olympia Falls, Ill.) intercepted Simpson quarterback Caleb Frye and returned the ball five yards. This gave Stout a 15-point cushion and sealed the game.

Stout's defense gave up 30 points, but still had a few individual standouts. Javauhn Staley (Sr, Sanford, Fla.) had seven total tackles (six solo, one assisted), a tackle for a loss of six yards, three pass breakups, and on top of that forced a fumble. Safety Tony Blair (Jr, Chippewa Falls) led the team in tackles with 10, and Isaiah Hardy (Jr, Olympia Falls, Ill.) sacked the Simpson quarterback for a loss of 13 yards.

Simpson College was led by running back Jordan Beem who rushed for 171 yards on 28 carries, and quarterback Caleb Frye who threw for 258 yards and three touchdowns on 42 attempts.

The Blue Devils will not be home until early October, but will not travel far as they head to St. Thomas University (Minn.) to face the Tommies in a 1 p.m. game Saturday Sept. 10.
