MENOMONIE (September 28, 2016) - UW-Stout started out strong, but the tide turned after the first set and 19th ranked UW-La Crosse won the final three sets to defeat the Blue Devils, 21-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-16, in Stout's home opener Wednesday at Johnson Fieldhouse.
The Blue Devils (8-8, 1-1 WIAC) look undaunted to start the match, rolling up a 25-21 win as
Ashley Pratt put down six of her match-high 15 kills in the set.
Kennedy Strain added six of her total 12 kills in the first set. As a team, Stout hit at a .423 clip in set one, recording 14 kills, with only three errors in 26 attempts.
But La Crosse (12-2, 1-1 WIAC) picked up the pace in set two as Jessica Jablonski recorded five kills in the set. The Blue Devils still played a strong set, hitting .222 as Pratt, Strain and
Olivia Jung each recorded four kills as Stout lost the set by two.
The Blue Devils' hitting rolled out of the gym in the third set, recording only five kills with eight errors, to hit a minus-.086. Jablonski put down six kills to lead La Crosse to the 25-17 win. The Eagles got a balance attack in the fourth set and Pratt recorded half of Stout's eight fourth-set kills.
Pratt led the way with 15 kills and Strain finished with 12. Jablonski and Jill Entinger each finished with 12 kills and Stephanie Henk contributed 11 kills. After a slow first set, the Eagles stepped up the pressure at the net and finished with two solo blocks and 20 assisted blocks.
Stout is off this weekend, but returns to Johnson Fieldhouse, Tuesday, Oct. 4 when they host Gustavus Adolphus College at 7 p.m..
