MENOMONIE (May 3, 2016) - UW-Stout grabbed two wins on Tuesday against non-conference opponent UW-Superior. The Blue Devils were backed by good pitching and 13 total runs as Stout captured the first game 9-4 and the second 4-1.
Josh Halling had four hits on the day including three singles and a double.
In the first game, Stout came out swinging early, scoring five runs in the first two innings behind a string of singles in the first inning and home run off the bat of
Noah Brown in the second. The Blue Devils then scored four more runs in the fifth inning behind a bunt from
Nate Sorenson that turned into an error by Superior. Stout finished on top 9-4.
Hayden Bowe came on to grab the win, tossing three innings, striking out two and allowing only two base runners.
Halling was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Brown was 2-for-3 with three RBI,
Brady Burzynski was 2-for-3 with two RBI and
Jared Jarvensivu, Sorenson and
Austin Littmann were all 2-for-4 as Stout stacked up 14 hits.
The second game moved quickly. The combined pitching staff of
Drew Worth,
Derek Graves,
Patrick Gullickson and
Brett Steinwagner gave up six hits, but gave up only run.
The game was close after the second inning with the Blue Devils up 2-1. Superior scored in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Blue Devils took the eventual game-winners in the second inning, scoring two runs.
Tyler Kinderman led off the inning, legging out a slide-into-second double. Jared Wilson moved Kinderman to third with a shot through the right side. Following a groundout that moved Wilson to second,
Austin Littmann plated Kinderman with a ground out to shortstop and Wilson moved to third. Moments later, Wilson scored on a wild pitch.
Stout added to their lead in the fifth inning after a few walks and another string of singles, including a two-run single by
Hunter Dicus. Dicus was 2-for-3 in the contest. Both teams recorded six hits
The wins were Stout's first sweep since the opening weekend of the season when the Blue Devils took both games from Heidelberg University.
Stout will play their last conference contest of the regular season this weekend as they head to UW-Whitewater for a pair of double headers Friday and Saturday. The Blue Devils will conclude the season by hosting a non-conference doubleheader with Macalester College, Monday, May 9 at 2:30 p.m.
