MENOMONIE (May 1, 2016) - UW-Stout's
Tori Workman was right on average with the number of strikeouts, recording four in the Blue Devils first game 2-0 shutout win over Bethel University, but even more importantly, Workman let very few balls out of the infield as she forced 14 groundouts. But the Blue Devils would earn a split on Senior Day, dropping the second game, 6-4, to the Royals at Alumni Field Sunday.
Workman scattered five hits, allowed one multi-base hit, and stranded five runners.
Stout (17-19) got on the board first.
Nicole Rogers drew a lead off walk, then moved to second on
Gabby Gawreluk sacrifice bunt. Rogers moved to third on
Kim Jablonski's ground out. Rogers came how on
Rachel Thomas' single to center field.
Stout added their second run of the game in the fourth inning when Thomas drove in her second run of the game, driving in Rogers for the second time of the game.
Bethel (17-19) got runners on base in the fifth, sixth and seventh innnings, but Workman shutdown any threat.
Thomas was 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead all hitters.
In the second game, Bethel scored twice in both the first and second innings. Stout got a run in the first inning on
Beth Wood's sacrifice fly. Bethel added a run in the fifth inning to take a 5-1 lead.
The Blue Devils had their biggest outburst of the day with a three-run fifth inning, but got a little help from the Royals. With runners on second and third, Workman came in to pinch hit and sent a fly ball deep to center field, where the ball was dropped, allowing Thomas and
McKayla Brunner to score and Workman moved to third base. Wood drove in Workman with a single up the middle.
That would be it for Stout and Bethel added another run in the sixth inning. The Royals outhit Stout, 8-3.
Stout will compete in the WIAC Softball Championship, Friday, May 6 where they will take on UW-Whitewater in the first round of the tournament at 10 a.m. at Carson Park in Eau Claire. The winner will take on top-seeded UW-Eau Claire at 2 p.m. The loser will play the loser of the UW-La Crosse/UW-Oshkosh match-up at 4 p.m.
