PLATTEVILLE (May 1, 2016) -Â It just wasn't in the cards for UW-Stout as the Blue Devils lost both games at UW-Platteville in the final inning of both contests. The Pioneers snatched up wins of 6-5, 4-3, to take 3-of-4 games in the weekend series.
In the opener, Stout (12-20, 4-12 WIAC) held a 5-3 lead heading into the final inning after coming back with two runs in both the eighth and the ninth innings to overcome a 3-1 deficit. But the Pioneers (18-17Â 4-12 WIAC) got a two-out, two-run double from Casey Schroeder and then added the game winner, an RBI single by Tanner Galeazzi to left field.
It was more of the same dog that bit Stout in the first game that returned for the second game. After falling behind 3-0, Stout got a run back in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by
Noah Brown, then tied the game in the eighth on Jared Wilson's infield RBI groundout and
Jared Jarvensivu's RBI single to left field to tie the score at 3-3. Evan Greco sliced a one-out double, moved to third on a single by Jim Pavilik and came home on an infield error.
Starting pitchers for Stout -
Kellen Pearson, in game one,
Zach Carlson in game two - recorded six strikeouts apiece. Pearson scattered eight runs over 7.1 innings and allowed three earned runs.
Brett Steinwagner allowed two hits in relief, striking out two but was saddled with the loss. Carlson went 4.0 innings, scattering six hits and three earned runs.
Max Sires worked long relief, striking out two and allowing four hits and one unearned run.
In the opener, both teams recorded 10 hits, with Stout's
Austin Littmann and the Pioneers' Zack Iverson and Schroeder going 3-for-4. Littmann had two RBI, while Schroeder drove in three runs. In the second game, the Pioneers outhit Stout, 10-7. Stout's
Jordan Wilson and the Pionners' Galeazzi were 3-for-5.
The Blue Devils will host former WIAC foe UW-Superior, Tuesday, May 3 in a pair of seven inning contests, before wrapping up the conference season at UW-Whitewater, May 6-7.
