Stout shakes off first game loss, pick up second game shutout win

UW-Oshkosh 8, UW-Stout 1 | UW-Stout 4, UW-Oshkosh 0

MENOMONIE (April 9, 2016) - It took one game, but UW-Stout shook off the effects of a 20-day layoff and rebounded with a 4-0 win over UW-Oshkosh Saturday at Nelson Field. Earlier in the day, the Blue Devils lost an 8-1 opener in their first action since March 19.

In the opener, the Blue Devils (7-6, 1-1 WIAC) could not put things together in any aspects of the game, even though the Titans (5-9, 1-1 WIAC) had only one more hit than Stout. The Titans recorded eight hits to Stout's seven, but the Blue Devils committed four errors.

Oshkosh took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, added a run in the fourth and three runs in the sixth before Stout got on the board with a solo home run by Noah Brown in the seventh. The Titans added two more runs in the eighth. Titans' pitcher Peter Jewell went the distance, recording nine strikeouts and Johnny Eagan and Robbie Kleman each had three RBI apiece.

The nightcap started off as a pitching dual between Stout's Derek Graves and Oshkosh's Colan Treml. Both teams were scoreless until the top of the seventh when Stout broke out for four runs.

Ryan Connor got Stout on the board when his double plated Josh Halling, who had opened the inning with a single. Halling had moved to second on Brown's single up the middle. After a Titan pitching change, Hunter Dicus drove in Connor and Brown with a double down the right field line. Freshman Nate Sorenson drove in the final run of the game to give Stout a 4-0 cushion.

Graves worked his way out of a pair of jams in the eighth inning. When the Titans' Eagan got an infield hit, Graves forced Andy Brahier into a double play ball. Graves then hit the next batter. Graves got help on the next play when Jordan Wilson laid out for a diving fly out in left field to end the inning.

Stout threatened in the ninth, but came away empty. Brett Steinwagner closed out the game for Graves, forcing a fly out, a strikeout and a groundout.

Graves scattered six hits and allowed one walk.

Connor led the way at the plate for the Blue Devils, going 3-for-5. Dicus was 3-for-5 with two RBI. Tyler Nalbach was 3-for-4 at the plate.

The teams will square off again Sunday, April 10 at noon. The doubleheaders were originally scheduled for Oshkosh, but were moved to Menomonie when the Titans' field was unplayable.
