St. Thomas 3, UW-Stout 2
ST. PAUL, Minn. (April 3, 2016) - UW-Stout was aggressive on the base paths to the end, but the Blue Devils were tipped by 23rd ranked University of St. Thomas, 3-2, in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday. The Tommies had won the opener, 7-0.
Trailing by what would turn out to be the final score heading into the seventh inning,
Rachel Thomas led off the inning with an infield single. After a pop-up on the next batter for the first out, Thomas was off on a steal attempt, but was thrown out.
Beth Wood followed with a walk, but the game ended on a foul fly to third base.
Thomas had a good game at the plate, going 2-for-4 including a one-out double in the third inning. Thomas moved to third on a bunt single by
Karley Wiensch, then came home on Wood's single to right field to tie the game at 1-1. The Blue Devils took the lead shortly when she scored from third on Sarah Griesbach's misplayed sacrifice bunt.
The Tommies took the early lead when Stout's starting pitcher,
Tori Workman, was tagged with an unearned run in the first inning.
After Stout tied the score in the third, the Tommies tied the score in the fourth on M DuPruis' RBI single. The Tommies got what would prove to be the game-winning run in the fifth when Heather Kascht's squeeze bunt scored Micaela Trainor. Stout stranded a runner at third in the sixth and left another runner on in the seventh.
Workman took the loss, allowing only one earned run and scattered five hits, recording five strikeouts.
In the opening game, Stout was held hitless until the seventh inning when Wood led off with a single. The Tommies out-hit Stout, 13-1, in the first game.
Stout will be at the University of Northwestern, Wednesday, April 6 and at St. Olaf College, Thursday, April 7. Stout opens WIAC play Saturday, April 9 at UW-Whitewater, then will be at UW-Oshkosh, Sunday, April 10.
