Blue Devils earn split with Platteville, Burzynski sets stolen base record

PLATTEVILLE (April 29, 2016) - UW-Platteville used a big third inning to capture the first game, 8-1, and UW-Stout scraped away take a 7-3 win in the second game of a WIAC doubleheader Friday.

Platteville (16-17, 2-12 WIAC) used a five-run third inning in the opener, then added a single run in the seventh and two runs in the eighth on their way to the win. Stout's only run of the game came in the seventh inning on solo home run by Noah Brown. Stout was held to four hits.

In the second game, Jared Jarvensivu led off the third innng with a walk, the stole second and third base. After Austin Littmann drew a walk, Brady Burzynski brought Jarvensivu home with a sacrfice fly.

The Blue Devils (12-18, 4-10 WIAC) made it 2-0 in the fifth inning when Hunter Dicus plated Josh Halling, who led off the inning by getting on with an error. The Pioneers' pitching gave Stout two runs in the sixth inning. Brown drew a bases loaded walk and Ryan Connor was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Stout had a 4-0 lead.

Stout put up three runs in the seventh inning. Jon Krueger was driven home on a double by Littmann. Littmann came home on Burzynski's infield single. Burzynski then stole second, officially giving him the Stout all-time stolen base record. Burzynski came home on Brown's double down the right field line.

The Pioneers got three runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Derek Graves went 7.1 inning and struck out five to the get the win. Brett Steinwagner finished out the game, striking out two and allowing one hit. Burzynski was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Brown was 1-for-2 with two RBI, but drew three walks. Littmann was 2-for-4.

Burzynski has 45 career stolen bases, passing the mark of 44 set by Tate Cummins from 1997-99.

The two teams will meet again Saturday, April 30.
