EAU CLAIRE (April 27, 2016) - After giving up a 9-3 opening loss, then waiting out a more than one-hour rain delay, UW-Stout battled back to make the second game a competitive battle with UW-Eau Claire before falling, 5-4, Wednesday at Carson Park.
Eau Claire (20-11-1,9-2-1 WIAC) took a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the second game as the Blugolds opened the innng with four consecutive hits. Stout responded with two runs in the top of the third. With one out,
Rachel Thomas cracked a double.
Karley Wiensch reached on an error, then advanced to second and Thomas scored all the way from second on the error. Wiensch was plated on a double by
Beth Wood and Stout trailed 3-2.
The Blue Devils (14-18,4-8 WIAC) tied the game in the third on a solo home run by freshman
Alicia Meyer, her team-best third round-tripper of the season.
Eau Claire snatched the lead back in the fifth inning, but Stout tied the game in the top of the seventh. Meyer led off the inning with a single, then moved to second on
Sara Griesbach's sacrifice bunt. Meyer moved to third on a dropped third strike. The Blue Devils drew a pair of walks to load the bases and Meyer came home when Wood was safe on an infield error.
In the bottom of the inning, the Blugolds' Tayler Mort hit a sacrifice fly to end the game.
Meyer was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. The Blugolds had four batters stroke two hits.
In the opener, the Blue Devils took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when
Heather Bol punched a roller down to first base, which was misplayed, allowing
Rachel Thomas to score.
But the Blugolds put up a five-spot in their half of the first inning to take a 5-1 lead. Stout got a run back in the top of the second when Thomas drew a bases loaded walk to cut the lead to 5-2. Eau Claire added two runs in the bottom of the inning on a two-run home run by Evie Schaller and the Blugolds led 7-2.
There was no scoring until the sixth inning. Thomas brought home
Sara Griesbach with a bases loaded single up the middle. Two Stout errors helped lead to two Eau Claire runs in the bottom of the inning.
Eau Claire outhit Stout 13-6. The Blue Devils stranded nine.
Karley Wiensch was 2-for-2 for Stout and Thomas had two RBI. Rachel Heffel was 3-for-4 with three runs scored for the Blugolds. Schaller was 2-for-4 with three RBI.
The Blue Devils are scheduled to be at Gustavus Adolphus, Thursday, April 28, then will close out the conference season by traveling to UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, April 30. Stout will close the regular season by hosting Bethel University, Sunday, May 1 at 1 p.m.
