MENOMONIE (April 23, 2016) - UW-Stout and UW-La Crosse put on a hitting performance, recording 57 total hits between the two teams in the two games, but the Eagles swept the Blue Devils, 13-9, 14-6, Saturday at Nelson Field.
The Eagles (21-6, 10-0 WIAC) are the top hitting team in the NCAA Division III and they pounded out 14 hits in the first game, turning it up a notch in the second game to put 18 hits in the book.
The Blue Devils (11-15, 3-7 WIAC) proved to show some prowess at the plate, knocking out 12 hits in the first game and 13 in the second.
Both teams left a number of runners on base, as well. La Crosse stranded nine runners in the first game and 13 in the second game, while Stout left eight runners in game one and 12 in game two.The Eagles Justin Anderson was 7-of-11 on the day with eight RBI, six in the first game. Brady Burzynski was 4-for-7 on the afternoon and
Noah Brown was 5-for-10 with five total RBI, including four in the second game.
In game one, the Eagles scored a run in the first inning, but the Blue Devils came back with four runs in the bottom of the inning.
Jake Johnson drove in two runs in the inning. The Eagles answered back with four runs of their own in the top of the second innings, getting RBIs from Ben Morgan, Adam Cordova, Taylor Kohlwey and Justin Anderson. Hunter Dicus. The lead was short-lived. LaCrosse tied the score on a two-run home run by Hoffman. Anderson gave La Crosse an 11-8 lead on a three-run home run in the sixth inning. Stout cut the lead to two runs with an unearned run in the sixth. La Crosse added solo runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
Game two was more of the same as the ball flew all over the field. La Crosse opened the game with two runs in the first. Stout cut the lead in half on a Brown RBI in the bottom of the inning. The Eagles put a three-spot on the board in the third. Anderson hit a solo home run and Morgan and Travis Buxton-Verstegan drove in a run and La Crosse led 5-1. In the third inning, Stout's Burzynski stole second and third, then came home on Brown's single. The Eagles widened the gap with a five-run fifth inning. Stout got two runs back in the fifth to cut the lead to 10-4. La Crosse added a pair of run in the seventh, and Stout got those back in the eighth. Brown got another RBI in the inning and Stout trailed 12-6. Nate Heili and Morgan each drove in runs to close out the scoring in the ninth.
The teams are scheduled to meet again Sunday, April 24. The times of the games have been moved up to a 10 a.m. start in anticipation of possible inclement weather.
