MENOMONIE (April 13, 2016) - For the second year in a row, UW-Stout had trouble pushing runs across the plate and fell to UW-La Crosse, 4-1, 7-1, Wednesday, at Alumni Field in the Blue Devils' home opener.
Stout (9-13, 1-5 WIAC) last season were shutout in both meetings with the Eagles in La Crosse, and this season the Blue Devils didn't touch home until the seventh inning in each game. Stout had five hits in each game, but the Eagles (17-10, 2-2 WIAC) got their runs in spurts. La Crosse had eight hits in the first game, seven in the second.
In the opener where Stout stranded eight runners, the Eagles scored twice in the fifth inning and twice in the seventh. Stout broke apart the shutout in the bottom of the seventh when
Tori Workman pushed a run across when she reached on an error.
After taking a 2-0 lead with single runs in the third and fifth innings, the Eagles used a five-run sixth inning to take control and a 7-0 lead.
Sara Griesbach drove in pinch runner
Gabby Gawreluk for Stout's only run in the seventh.
Rachel Thomas was 2-for-4 in the first game for Stout and
Beth Wood was 2-for-3 in the second game.
Stout will host UW-Platteville Saturday, April 16 at 1 p.m. and then step out of conference play when they host Wartburg College, Sunday, April 17 at 2 p.m.
