Softball team experiences ups and downs in season opener

St. Benedict 7, UW-Stout 0 | St. Benedict 10, UW-Stout 4

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (March 4, 2015) - A young UW-Stout softball team experienced a few low points but also showed some high points in a pair of losses to the College of St. Benedict Friday at the Husky Dome on the campus of St. Cloud State University.

The Blazers (3-1) dominated the first game, 7-0. In the second game of the twinbill, the Blue Devils (0-2) scored their first runs of the season in a 10-4 loss.

In the opener, a disastrous third inning led to five Blazer runs as Stout committed four errors in the inning. Stout did scatter eight innings and stranded five runners, including leaving the bases loaded in the fifth inning.

Heather Bol (Jr, Baldwin) and Beth Wood (So, Mineral Point) each were 2-for-3, while Rachel Thomas (So, Hastings, Minn), Karley Wiensch (Sr, Chippewa Falls), Tori Workman (Sr, Prior Lake, Minn) and Sara Griesbach (Sr, Stratford) each picked up their first hit of the season.

Workman went the distance, allowing seven hits but only one earned run. She notched three strikeouts, now needing only 10 strikeouts to break the school career strikeout record.

The Blazers scored their first run in the first inning and added another in the fourth. Kate Deming was 2-for-2. Megan Tonianato, Sara Wennerstrand and Nicole Nelson each drove in a pair of runs.

In the nightcap, the Blazers jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three innings, thanks in part due to Wennerstrand's two two-run home runs and another two run shot by Emilie Antony..

Stout staved off early elimination when they scored three runs in the fourth inning. Kaylee Francois (Fr, Green Bay) led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch for the second time in the game. Francois moved to second on McKayla Brunner's groundout. Following a flyout, Mariah Diercks (Jr, Ellsworth) smacked a double to left center, scoring Francois. Gabby Gawreluk (Sr, St. Paul, Minn) singled, moving Diercks to third, and Gawrulek went to third on a play on Diercks. Diercks and Gawrulek came home on Workman's single to right field.

The Blazers answered back with two runs in the fifth to take a 10-3 lead. Stout's final run came in the fifth when Francois drove in Rachel Thomas, who had initially reached on a lead-off bunt single.

Stout collected eight hits, bringing their two-game total to 15. Workman drove in a pair of runs and was 2-for-4. Thomas was 2-for-4,while Abbey Ball (So, Austin, Minn), Francois, Diercks and Gawreluk each got their first hit of the season.

Wennerstrand led all players with four RBI and was 3-for-4 for the Blazers. Deming and Megan Toninato were each 2-for-4. Madison Mikolich was 2-for-2.

The Blue Devils are off until they travel to North Myrtle Beach, S.C., to play 12 games March 13-19.
