Game 2: UW-Stout 3, Spalding University 0MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 13, 2016) - Stout dropped their first contest of their trip, but followed it up with a win in their second game to split the first day of their 2016 spring break trip.
Beth Wood had three hits and a walk on the day.
In their first match up with the Eureka College Red Devils, the Blue Devils jumped out to tie the game 4-4 in the first inning. A slew of singles by
Tori Workman,
Rachel Thomas and
Heather Bol helped their cause. The Blue Devils struggled on the defensive side of the ball after this good first inning; they surrendered six runs in the third inning. The game lasted only two more innings. The contest ended 13-5.
The second game proved to be better defensively, allowing only three hits total. Wood got the pitching start for the Blue Devils, she along with Workman pitched the shutout. The two of the three runs came in the first inning after Workman and Thomas scored on singles from Wood and Bol.
McKayla Brunner then notched an RBI in the third driving in Wood. The Blue Devils defense was the key. They had four innings in which they outed the first three batters faced.
Striking out three batters in the second game, Workman is now only seven strikeouts away from breaking the school record. In her three innings pitched, she faced and outed all nine batters; allowing no hits.
The Blue Devils will play two more games tomorrow. The first game comes against Morrisville State at 11:30 a.m. (ET) followed by a game vs. Albright College at 1:30 p.m. (ET).
