Vassar College 13, UW-Stout 3FORT MEYERS, Fla (March 19, 2016) - UW-Stout overcame an early deficit to rally for a 7-3 first game win over Vassar College, but could not rebound in the second game, falling to the Brewers, 13-3, in the Blue Devils' final game of their annual spring break trip.
After Vassar (3-4) got to Blue Devil starter
Hayden Bowe for three runs on three hits in the second, the Blue Devils (6-5) would score the final seven runs of the game, including five runs in the fourth inning.
Ryan Connor opened Stout's fourth inning with a walk, then stole second.
Tyler Kinderman drew a walk and
Austin Littmann filled the bases with a single.
Josh Halling drew the bases loaded walk for Stout's first run.
Hunter Dicus drove in Kinderman and Littman when he sliced a single to center field.
Noah Brown drove in Halling and Dicus with a double.
Stout added two more runs in the fifth. Freshman
Nate Sorenson had a lead-off double, then was moved to third on Kinderman's sacrifice bunt. Littmann pounded out a double down the left field line to score Sorenson. Littmann moved to third on Halling's ground out, then scored on a wild pitch.
Bowe settled down after the second inning, allowing only two hits the rest of the way. Bowe recorded the win, surrendering five hits. He had two strikeouts and a walk.
Brown and Dicus both recorded two hits and two RBI, with Dicus going 2-for-5 and Brown 2-for-3. Littmann was 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Sorensen was 2-for-4.
In game two, the Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead when
Jon Krueger's sacrifice fly brought in Halling in the bottom of the first inning. But Vassar again struck in the second inning, this time scoring seven runs. The Blue Devils cut the lead to 7-3 on RBIs by Littmann and Halling.
The Breweres would have nothing to do with that, rolling up five runs in the fifth inning for a 12-3 lead, then added the final run in the the seventh inning.
Vassar recorded 15 hits, while Stout had seven. Sorenson was 2-for-2 with a run scored to lead Stout. Eric Strikland of Vassar lead all players with five RBI, four of them coming on a grand slam in the second.
The Blue Devils will be off until they open the northern schedule by hosting perennial powerhouse St. Thomas, Wednesday, March 30 at 1 p.m.
