SUNY-New Paltz 9, UW-Stout 1NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (March 18, 2016) - UW-Stout used a pair of big rallies to win two games at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, downing Albright College, 3-2, and Rutgers-Camden, 4-3, Friday. The Blue Devils played a third game later in the afternoon with SUNY-New Paltz, dropping the game, 9-1 in five innings.
In the first game of the day, the Blue Devils (7-6) surrendered two runs to Albright in the bottom of the third.
Stout would get those back in the top - and one extra - in the top of the fifth.
Middle infielders
Kim Jablonski and
Karley Wiensch led off the fifth with consecutive singles, then advanced one base on a wild pitch.
Tori Workman brought Jablonski home on a sacrifice fly and Wiensch scored on a throwing error on the play to tie the score.
Rachel Thomas tripled and
Beth Wood brought her home with a sacrifice fly to center for the eventual game-winning run.
Wood would record the win, giving way to
McKayla Brunner in the fifth. Brunner allowed only one hit, but gave way to Workman in the bottom of the seventh. Workman recorded the save, getting the last two outs of the game.
Thomas and Wood proved big again in the second game of the day against Rutgers-Camden.
Workman started the contest and went the distance, but allowed a single run in the fourth and two runs in the sixth inning and Stout trailed 3-0 going into the bottom of the seventh, then quickly found themselves with two outs.
Sara Griesbach was called on to pinch hit and delivered a single to left field. Wiensch recorded an infield hit. Workman drew a walk to load the bases. Thomas sliced a single to center field, scoring Wiensch and Griesbach. Thomas advanced to second on throw, putting runners at second and third. Wood dropped a single into left field and both Workman and Thomas scored, ending the game.
A threat of rain Friday evening had Stout and New Paltz splitting apart a scheduled Saturday doubleheader and the Blue Devils ran out of oomph, falling to New Paltz, 9-1, in five innings Friday. The Hawks scored a single run in the second, four runs in the third, then added four in the top of the fifth.
Stout's only run of the game came in the second inning.
Sara Griesbach led off with a double, then scored on
Alicia Meyer's single.
If weather and field conditions permit, Stout and New Paltz will meet Saturday, March 19 at 9:30 a.m. in a single game.
