MENOMONIE (February 3, 2016) - UW-Stout came up just short to UW-La Crosse in their second meeting of the season. The Blue Devils had a chance to take the game into overtime with seconds left, but the Eagles' defense proved too strong. The final buzzer ended with a score of 60-58.
Sarah Schoch came back for the first time since injury to pour in 16 points for the Blue Devils.
Kyleigh Hebert also scored 16 for Stout.
The first half was full of runs. Stout (8-12, 2-7 WIAC) opened the game on a 7-2 run that was capped off on a
Shannan Watkins lay in, assisted by Hebert. The Eagles bounced back and went on a 14-0 run to make the game 16-7. Stout scored four more in the period to end the first quarter down 24-11.
In the second quarter, the two teams traded baskets keeping the differential relatively the same throughout the quarter. Stout ended the half on a
Danielle Adams jumper, assisted by Watkins. The Blue Devils were still down, 42-28 at the end of the half.
The third and fourth quarters were a battle for the Blue Devils. The third quarter helped Stout close the gap even more; they found themselves down by six after a steal and fastbreak layup by
Bailey Diersen. Hebert also helped the Blue Devils in the third, sinking a buzzer beating layup to end the third period.
The fourth quarter included some of the game's most key plays. Watkins sunk two free throws around the two minute mark to edge Stout to the smallest margin since the first quarter: three points. The tide looked like it was turning after great anticipation from Diersen, who forced an Eagles' turnover with 18 seconds left in regulation. After the steal, Hebert brought the game to 58-59 after making one-of-two free throws. The final Stout play was stifled by the Eagle's defense. La Crosse came out on top 60-58.
It was a team effort by the Blue Devils. Schoch added three rebounds and two blocks to her 16 points, Diersen had seven points, two rebounds and a career best six steals, and
Jenna Goldsmith added six points.
The Eagles out rebounded the Blue Devils 44-36, including 12 offensive rebounds. MaKenzie Miller had a game high 17 points for La Crosse.
Stout will try and take a win on the road Saturday against conference leader UW-Oshkosh. The game is set to tip off at 3 p.m.
