UW-Stout 5, UW-Superior 3
SUPERIOR (December 2, 2016) - UW-Stout survived a third period shootout, coming out on top of UW-Superior, 5-3, Friday at Wessman Arena.
After only one goal in the first two periods, that coming from the Blue Devils'
Dylan Zins (So, Prior Lake, Minn) at 15:48 of the first period, Zins' first goal of the season, the teams combined for seven third period goals - all by different players.
The Yellowjackets tied the score at 3:18 of the third on a goal by Daniel Litchke, but the Blue Devils grabbed it back three minutes later on
Mathias Ahman's (So, Harnesand, Sweden) first goal of the season, this one coming on the power play. Stout took a 3-1 lead when
Alex Toscano (Fr, Duluth, Minn) scored five minutes later on the advantage at 11:47.
The Yellowjackets knotted the score with two goals in just over a three minute time span, with goals by Brandon Anderson and Bruno Birzitis at 12:04 and 15:07, respectively.
Freshman
Adam Kresl (Eagle River) gave Stout the lead for good just about 90 seconds later, scoring at 16:33.
Joe Anderson (So, Side Lake, Minn) got the clincher, an empty net goal with less than 30 seconds remaining in the game.
Tommi Ahlgren (Fr, Tampere, Finland) captured the win, making 22 saves. Bryce Fink had 18 saves for the Yellowjackets. Stout got assists by Toscano,
Tom Schmidt (So, Alexandria, Minn),
Joe Kleven (So, Shakopee, Minn),
Jack Forbort (Fr, Duluth, Minn) and
Colton Brausen (Fr, Little Canada, Minn).
Stout will be at Concordia-Moorhead, Friday, Dec. 9, and return home Saturday, Dec. 10 to host St. Olaf College.
