MENOMONIE (December 10, 2016) -
Etienne Roy (Jr, Saint-Henri, Quebec) made his first start in goal for UW-Stout and handed the Blue Devils their first shutout of the season with a 3-0 victory over St. Olaf College Saturday at the Fanetti Community Center.
Roy, a junior transfer from Franklin Pierce University, needed only 18 saves to notch his first win as a Blue Devil.
In contrast to the night before when Stout lost 6-1 at Concordia-Moorhead, the Blue Devil defense was, well, Stout, shutting the Ole out. When the teams last met in November, the Blue Devils (6-6-0) needed overtime to take a win. Stout killed off six power play opportunities, including a 5-on-3 in the second period, and also picked up a shorthanded goal late in the game after after the Oles (3-9-1) pulled their goalie.
Stout scored a pair of goals in the first period.
Riley Colvard (Sr, Centerville, Minn)got the Blue Devils on the board at 14:16, with assists by
Colton Brausen (Fr, Little Canada, Minn) and
Trent Olson (Fr, Superior). The Blue Devils took advantage of a penalty four minutes later when
Justin Moody (Sr, Grand Forks, N.Dak) scored at 17:59 of the first period, taking an assist from
Joe Kleven (So, Shakopee, Minn)
Stout put 12 shots on frame in both the first and second periods, then pulled back to seven in the third period. Meantime, the Blue Devil defense allowed seven shots in the first period, six in the second and five in the third.
After Stout drew a penalty late in the game, Brausen scored an empty net goal to finish out the third period, scoring on a 6-on-4, for Stout first shorthanded goal of the year.
The Blue Devils will wrap up first semester play Tuesday, Dec. 13 when they host Northland College at 7:30 p.m.
