MENOMONIE (December 10, 2016) - When UW-Stout's John Keefe (Jr, Medford) hit a shot at the buzzer to end the first half, the points would represent the widest scoring margin of the game as the Blue Devils went on to a two-point, 60-58, win over the University of Dubuque, Saturday on Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse.

The game featured eight tied scores throughout the night as the Blue Devils (6-2) could not shake the pesky Spartans (2-4). Stout maintained a small lead throughout the second half, but the Spartans went on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 50-50 with 4:36 remaining. The teams traded 3-pointers. John Lahti put Stout up with a free throw and the Spartans' TJ Lake gave Dubuque their first lead, 55-54, at 3:04, since the opening minutes of the game.

Braden Walbeck (So, Fall Creek) and Sam Ortmann (Jr, Buffalo, Minn) hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give Stout a 60-55 with 36 seconds left. A 3-pointer by Deonte Newsome with 22 seconds pulled Dubuque to within 60-58 with 22 seconds left. Stout killed 17 seconds off the clock, but turned the ball over with five seconds left. The Blue Devils did not allow the Spartans a wide-open shot and the 3-point attempt by Marcus McDaniel hit the front of the rim and the rebound was pulled down by Ortmann who sealed the ball and the game.

For the second consecutive game, Walbeck was the Blue Devils' leading scorer, finishing up with a career-best 17 points, dropping in 10 points in the second half.  Keefe recorded Stout's first double-double of the season, rolling the net for 15 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Keefe finished with eight assists to tease with a triple-double.

Jalen Jackson led the Spartans with 14 points. Jake Weber rolled up a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Lake finished with 13 points.

Stout held a 43-26 advantage off the glass. Keegan Dickson (So, Apple Valley, Minn) finished with nine rebounds, matching a career-best.

At halftime of the game, the basketball court was named Dewey Mintz Court in honor of 27-year men's basketball court Dwain "Dewey" Mintz. A member of six different halls of fame, Mintz posted 385 wins while at Stout from 1962-89. Here is the link to the video that was shown.

The Blue Devils are now idle for the rest of the academic semester and will resume action Dec. 29 when they play Central College at the Just-A-Game Classic in Wisconsin Dells.
