Last second lay-up gives Stout season-opening loss

MENOMONIE (November 15, 2016) - It was a layup in the last five seconds of the game by Augsburg College that made the final difference in the game, but it was the Auggies' shooting from downtown that gave the visitors a 79-77 season-opening win over UW-Stout Tuesday at Johnson Fieldhouse.

ouse.The Auggies' Camryn Speese hit a layup with just over five seconds remaining in the contest to give the Auggies the win. But Augsburg sprayed the basket from downtown all evening, connecting on 13-of-24 long range shots. Aiza Wilson was 5-of-9 from 3-point range to lead all scorers with 21 points.

After a tied first period at 19-19, the Blue Devils took a 46-31 halftime. Augsburg got back into the game after the break, outscoring stout 28-11 in the third quarter. Augsburg started off the quarter on a 8-0 run, then whittled Stout's lead to two points, 50-48 with four minutes remaining, then took a short-lived lead at 1:10.

Stout's Bailey Diersen hit a 3-pointer to put Stout back up 57-55, but two buckets by Wilson gave Augsburg a 59-57 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Augsburg took a five point, 62-57 lead on a Savannah Roth 3-pointer.  Stout's Emily Jacques hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 62-59 and a bucket by Diersen cut the lead to one, 62-61.

Stout would work their way to a five point lead on two baskets by Anna Brown, a layup by Kyncaide Diedrich and a steal and a layin by Shannan Watkins. A 3-pointer by Wilson and a steal and a basket by K'Aezha Wubben knotted the score at 69-69. The teams traded baskets and Brown gave Stout a one point, 74-73, lead with two minutes remaining. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Augsburg's Tamira McLemore gave the Auggies a 77-73 lead with about 90 seconds lefg

Diedrich pulled Stout to within two and Diersen tied the score at 77 with 18 seconds remaining, before Speese hit the game-winner.

Both teams had four players in double figures, led by Augsburg's Wilson with 21. McLemore finished with 16 points, Abby Jordan with 14 and Wubben with 12.

Stout was led by Diersen with 17 points. Brown scored a career-best 16 points. Diedrich set a career-high with 14 and had nine rebounds. (Diedrich did score 18 points against Wisconsin last week in an exhibition game). Watkins finished with 12 points.

The Blue Devils wielded a distinct advantage off the glass, pulling down 42 rebounds to Augsburg's 31. Jenna Goldsmith racked up a game-high 12 rebounds, 11 of them coming off the defensive glass.

Stout will take their show on the road for the next several weeks, starting with the College of St. Benedict Tournament Friday, Nov. 18 and Saturday, Nov. 19. Stout will play St. Mary's University Friday and St. Benedict Saturday.
