MENOMONIE (October 26, 2016) - UW-La Crosse scored three goals over the first five minutes of the second half, then held off UW-Stout for a 4-2 WIAC decision at Nelson Field Wednesday.
The Blue Devils (6-9-2, 3-3-0 WIAC) drew net first, but it wasn't until the final five minutes of the first half.
Jenna Swenson sent a free kick into the box and
Nikki Sedivy found the ball and booted it in for her first goal of the season - and the defender's first goal since her freshman season - in the 41st minute.
The Eagles (12-4-0, 4-2-0 WIAC) came out of the intermission blazing. Natalie Herzog scored only 37 seconds after the break. Haley Hartkemeyer scored two minutes later and Herzog scored her second goal of the night in the 50th minute for a 3-1 lead.
Stout pulled to within one goal in the 64th minute when
Sydney Kasper followed her shot in, then blocked the goalkeepers kick and the ball richocheted into the net and the Blue Devils trailed 3-2. The Eagles got the final score in the 83rd minute when Maddie Granos scored, assisted by Herzog.
The Eagles held a distinct advantage in shots, 21-3 overall. Stout's
Lynn Johnson had six saves and the Eagles' Abbi Burke had none. The four goals given up by Johnson was the most she has allowed in a game this year.
Stout will close out the regular season Saturday, Oct. 29 when they travel to UW-Eau Claire for 2 p.m. contest. The first round of the WIAC Championship begins Tuesday, Nov. 1.
