STEVENS POINT (October 2, 2016) - UW-Stout picked up a conference win with a 7-2 decision at UW-Stevens Point Sunday. The Blue Devils took two of three doubles matches, then went to three sets in three singles matches to secure the win.
Linsey Thisius would have a long, hard-fought day. The sophomore teamed with senior
Anna Lano at No. doubles to defeat Katelyn Asfeld and Jordan Tyjeski, 8-6, then came back from a one set deficit at No. 1 singles to defeat Asfeld, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.Â
Thisius and Lano would also team together later in the day to defeat St. Norbert's Elizabeth Manlick and Meg Witt at No. 1 doubles to record the Blue Devils' only win in an 8-1 loss to the Green Knights.
But back to the Stevens Point match-up where
Emma Pedersen and Jenna Welk fell at No. 2 doubles, 8-6, but the young No. 3 team of sophomore
Katie Kreibich and freshman
Annie Sandry took an 8-3 decision over Frances Weiss and Elizabeth Wilchowski.
Lano would down Weiss, 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and Welke would top Tyjeski at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
Katie Govin won 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4 singles and Kreibich won 6-1, 6-4, at No. 6 singles. Pedersen was blanked at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
The win was the Blue Devils' (5-4, 2-1 WIAC) second conference win of the season, giving them the most conference wins since 2007 with three conference matches remaining.
Against St. Norbert, Pedersen and Welke lost a close 8-5 decision at No. 2 doubles. All of the singles matches were decided in straight sets.
The Blue Devils are off until Friday, Oct. 7 when they travel to UW-La Crosse to take the Eagles on at 3 p.m. The Blue Devils wrap up the regular season when they host UW-Oshkosh, Friday, Oct. 14, and UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Oct. 15.
