Archived VideoMENOMONIE (January 27, 2016) - UW-Stout fought back a no. 14 ranked Stevens Point late regulation and overtime push, but it wasn't enough as the Pointers beat Stout in overtime, 69-61. The Blue Devils played some of their best basketball of the season. The Blue Devils were led by
Jenna Goldsmith and
Bailey Diersen.
The Blue Devils' defense was the key in the first half. Both teams were scoreless until the six minute mark of the first quarter. Goldsmith broke the 0-0 tie with a layup on an assist from
Danielle Adams. The two teams were traded baskets and the Pointers ended up on top in the first quarter 13-9.
The second quarter when much in the same way, each team only allowed contested baskets. The Blue Devils held the Pointers to only 10 points in the second quarter, up at halftime 26-23.
The third and fourth quarters were hard fought by Stout. The Blue Devils opened the second half on a 6-2 run and opened their lead to nine points on a layup from Diersen.
The fourth quarter opened with Stout finding themselves back on top by two after a steal from Goldsmith and a fast break and-one layup from
Shannan Watkins, assisted by
Kyleigh Hebert. The Pointers pushed through good defense from the Blue Devils in the late minutes, and tied the game at 56 to end regulation.
In the overtime period, the Blue Devils managed to only make one of their eight shots and three free throws. The Pointers were led by Lauren Anklam in OT as she made five free throws in the final 50 seconds of the period. The Blue Devils fell to the Pointers 69-61.
The Blue Devils were led by Goldsmith who poured in 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds; as well as Diersen who scored 12 points, six of which came at the free throw line.
Kyncaide Diedrich also scored in double-digits for the Blue Devils with 10 points, while also grabbing six boards.
Point was led by Allie Miceli who had a double-double: 20 points and 13 boards.
Stout will head on the road for their next game, making the short trip to Eau Claire for their second match up of the season against the Blugolds. The game is set to tip at 7 p.m.
