Third quarter run propels Stout past Platteville

UW-Stout 77, UW-Platteville 43 (Box Score)

PLATTEVILLE (January 16, 2016) - The Blue Devils were fueled by a third quarter, 16-2 run, to increase their lead and blow past the Pioneers. They were led by Jenna Goldsmith and Kyleigh Hebert. Goldsmith had 19 points and seven rebounds, while Hebert added 14 points and four assists.

Defense and transition offense were the two components that helped the Blue Devils (7-8, 1-3 WIAC) to a 77-43 win against the Platteville Pioneers (4-11, 1-3 WIAC). Stout managed to disrupt flow and grab 18 steals on the game that led to 14 fast break points, they also held the Pioneers to only 31 percent from the field.

In the first two quarters the two teams went back and fourth trading baskets. The first quarter ended in a 19-19 tie; Stout was able to open up the game a little bit more and ended the second quarter up by eight, holding a 36-28 lead.

The third quarter was when things really picked up, they stole five passes that led to transition layups and increased their lead to 23 at the end of the third quarter. They continued the pressure in the fourth quarter and finished the game on top, 77-47.

Ten different players scored for the Blue Devils. They also stayed out of foul trouble, only one Blue Devil had more than two personal fouls.

Stout hopes to continue their good defense and quick offense in their next game as they travel to UW-La Crosse next Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game.
